Binghamton, on the Susquehanna River, and centrally located on the crossroads of Interstates Routes I-81, I-88, and soon to be I-86, is located in the Heart of New York.
The Binghamton Carousels Between 1919 and 1934, George F. Johnson, a local shoe manufacturer, donated six beautiful carousels to our local parks. Johnson’s commitment to recreation was more than just good business, he felt carousels contributed to a happy community and would encourage young people to become useful citizens of the community. He believed carousels should be enjoyed by everyone and insisted that the municipalities never charge money to ride them. After 80 years, these magnificent machines are still running, and open from Memorial Day to Labor Day at no charge.
In a day when little is free, Binghamton offers an opportunity to step back in time, and at a price you can't beat.... FREE! The carousels were all manufactured by the Allan Herschell Companies of North Tonawanda, New York, in the country fair style. You can still hear the calliope sounds of the original Wurlitzer Band Organs on two of the carousels, and a Carousel Exhibit is located at Ross Park. If you ride on all six carousels, you will come across gorilla chariots, horses with lions in the saddle blankets, a dog, and a pig. Every carousel animal in Greater Binghamton is a jumper, they move up and down! You can Ride the Carousel Circuit by collecting a card at each carousel. When you have all six you'll receive a special button. Of the 170 wood-carved carousels remaining in the United States and Canada, six are in Greater Binghamton , New York!
